"A really great read, full of love, cheating, reconnection, passion & acceptance." Terry

Derek knows this affair has hurt the most. He'd apologise if she would only come home. Enjoy ...

Derek

Six am. Nina hadn’t come home. Derek hadn’t slept.

Seven am. Derek made two coffees out of habit. He drank one as the other grew cold on the kitchen bench. It sat in Nina’s spot, taunting him. Blowing his guilt all out of proportion.

Eight am. He checked his phone, again. Left a message, again.

Nine am. Two loads of washing done, house vacuumed. Kids bedrooms tidied. He changed the sheets on their bed, smoothing out the doona and putting the stupid pillows in place. Nina loved them and would appreciate the effort. If she came home.

Ten am. Derek paced around the kitchen wanting to do something, anything. Mid-morning already and his wife was still missing. He didn’t want to contact her friends. Nothing good could come from ringing women who would only ask questions, draw their own conclusions or would lie about where she was even if they knew.

He couldn’t trust anyone.

Especially himself.

Last night started so well. His wife was the most stunning woman in the room and she would be going home with him. He watched as she dazzled the guests with her wit and closed two deals based on the recommendations of the wives who won over their reluctant husbands.

Women loved her.

Men wanted to love her.

Only he would be going home with her, and would have if it hadn’t all turned to crap when his lover’s boyfriend found out.

Derek’s jaw still hurt from the boyfriend’s fist. His back hurt from breaking the desk as they tussled. He was too old to get involved with jealous boyfriends.

His lover telling his wife about their affair. In hindsight, he should have told his mistress that her friend was his wife. However, with years of experience behind him, the whole point of having a secret affair was that you don’t tell people about it. You don’t tell your boyfriend. You don’t tell the client, and you especially don’t tell your lover’s wife.

After Nina had so succinctly told him to leave her alone, he kept his distance as she moved from one of his clients to another. The graceful toss of her head, the silvery laugh. He didn’t care, she could take one or two of his clients if that was what she needed to forgive him.

They could talk about it in the ride home.

Only, he lost sight of Nina when the boat docked. He searched the docks, not one of their colleagues had seen her. Eventually he caught a taxi home. Expecting her anger. He didn’t expect a quiet and empty home.

He didn’t expect her to be out all night.

The longer she was missing, the more anxious Derek became.

Damn it, this wasn’t the first affair she had discovered. It wasn’t like she should be used to it, but damn it!

He didn’t want to admit the biggest difference this time. It was the first of his affairs that was so close to home. Normally, he’d apologize and Nina would be the moral voice of reason. Then, there would be silence and then after a day or two, sometimes even a week. they returned to normal. For the kids. For their careers. Because, despite everything he did, she was the love of his life and he couldn’t imagine living without her.

Eleven am. Still no Nina. Derek surprised his florist with orders of red roses to his wife. Yes, his wife, surely the florist had his wife’s details on file. Dozens of red roses for immediate delivery to her office and their home. Hell, he would have them delivered to her in person, if only he knew where she was.

Derek started to rationalize his behavior. Surely Nina knew by now that fidelity had nothing to do with love. What did she want from him? She could never understand, or know about the things he wanted, no, demanded from women and could never ask from the mother of his children.

Half past eleven. Derek rang his squash partner, a local real estate agent. One beach house, central coast, must have water views. Nina had always wanted one and he had always been the voice of reason. With their busy lives, they would never have time to spend there.

If only she came home, he’d make time.

Just before midday, he relaxed with the familiar sound of a car pulling into the driveway. Derek peered through the lounge window to see the cab driver get out to open her car door and one slender leg after another exit. She was still wearing the ice blue dress that had taken his breath away last night. Every single time he saw her, he still wanted her.

Yes, he was a cheating bastard and at times he didn’t know why he kept taking the risk of losing his wife and family for the thrill.

But surely, she knew deep down that even though he didn’t deserve her, he would readily lay down his life for Nina and the kids.

Still, it wouldn’t do for her to know that he’d been waiting up all night for her to come home. Derek went back into the kitchen and busied himself making coffee before she opened the front door. He expected her to find him. To yell. To scream. He deserved it, and once she got it off her chest they could move on.

Instead the click on the instant hot water changed to her showering temperature. Then the hot water activated. She came home and ignored him for a shower!

The kids would be home tonight. He needed to put this unpleasant experience behind them.

Taking a deep breath, he carried the two coffees to their bedroom.
